Fellow blogger and artist Curtis Lubbe aka collapsibleboat has done something cool. He transformed two of my sketches into something tangible: wonderfully sculpted and then burnt and glazed busts. You can see a few more pictures of Charles and Stephane here and of course don’t miss out on all the other wonderful creatures made by Curtis.

As some of you may know or have found out via the “Links”, one of my spare time activities consists of mixing dirty techno tunes. With two other friends we are the DJ-team “Frau Mit Muskeln” which translates to “Woman With Muscles”. Since I haven’t felt very compelled to draw much since my arrival in Japan I have made a few new mixes which you can listen to at our myspace page or you can download the tracks in high quality (320 kbps) directly off my server. Of course all these are accompanied by incredibly and intentionally oversaturated cover artwork. I’ll list them here for your fun.

The Land Of Smiling

Here is just a note that we’ve (Alexander and me) have arrived save and sound in Kyoto, Japan. Trying to fight jet lag and the exhaustion of the heat wave this blog will probably go on a temporary hiatus and I will post as soon as I got some new art work to show. I am sure it won’t be long. Until then I will leave you with a happy smiley I found a few days ago in my cereal.

I went to the town center this morning and unfortunately came across a flea market. I even bought some pretty useless but beautiful postcard from 1921 and some silly ads for evaporated “Glücksklee” milk. Lastly I couldn’t keep my greedy fingers off this strange tractor toy from China. Weird.

Happy Accidents In The Digital Age

I’ve been working on the cover of a book the last few days and yesterday it was almost finished. Except for the text I had everything painted and colored. I hit the magic “save now” command keys for one last time but then it happened. Painter stopped responding, showing me the dreaded “spinning beach ball of death”. I had to force quit the application facing the loss of several hours of work… Fortunately I have an automatized back-up routine running every morning at 5am and so I didn’t loose the complete file which would have been disastrous.

Why am I telling you this? Well, as I see it there are almost no so called “happy accidents” anymore in digital art. Everything is planned and everything has to be planned. There is not much entropy anymore and digital paint does not yet splatter about like it does in MeatSpace™. I did not think about this yesterday and also did not expect the “happy accident” that I was about to see when I reopened the file to continue my work in painter! Look at it. Isn’t it a beautiful picture? Something which I could have hardly achieved if my tools (the application and the powerbook) wouldn’t have stopped responding for a while… I love it.

The second image shows an enlargement at 100% actual pixel size…

The last image is a detail shot at about 500% enlargement.

I must admit that I read about this before and that I did not take immediately. Something had to happen first before I was affected enough to take action myself. Just yesterday I wanted to view a set of photographs by famous low brow artist COOP only to realize that my access to this particular set had been censored. So, I want to urge everyone who uses flickr, to upload the “think flickr, think!” to their account and copy the quoted text.

Flickr, my ass.

Seit gestern werden für deutsche Nutzer keine Bilder mehr angezeigt, die als ‘moderate’ oder ‘restricted’ markiert sind! Es gibt keine Moeglichkeit das umzustellen – das ist eine grobe Unverschämtheit und Frechheit von flickr!

If your Yahoo! ID is based in Singapore, Germany, Hong Kong or Korea you will only be able to view safe content based on your local Terms of Service so won’t be able to turn SafeSearch off.

The Sketchy Stuff

I have been slacking a bit the last few days, trying to complete my visa request for Japan and other things that had to wait. Today I sat down, sketching a bit in Painter and this is what I came up with: a silly monkey-esque creature with a bit too much skin.

In other news I have joined a blog created by my good friend Alexander Draude. R0108 is shorthand for the studio where we work here at my university. It is our outlet for all kinds of silly things, thoughts and everything else concerning our odd life here. LINK

Update: Delicious Generation Party

Yesterday I posted about the artwork I made for the Delicious Generation Party at Aftermodern Gallery in San Francisco during the Apple WWDC. It is cool to see photos pop up on the net here and there with my artwork in the background. Wouldn’t have thought though to be featured as prominently as in this particular picture by flickr.com user cjmartin.

More pictures can be seen here, here and maybe some other places as well.

Update: For another little recap of the party read Phill Ryu’s entry on his blog. Oh, and it seems the curator of Aftermodern Gallery wanted to keep the prints for a while longer. If you haven’t seen them yet, hurry up.

Shop The Store

Most important annoucement today? Idleware is now officially loving your money. Just navigate to my newly build store and spent some dough on good art (and make me smile in return – the greedy-dollar-sign-smile, of course). More things will be added soon. Look out for artbooks, prints and other cool things.

Other cool things today? Markus and Lea came in and brought this awesome print with them in exchange for some of my artwork. Ever since they made this print I wanted one copy. Oh, did I mention it is a linocut limited to only 20 prints? Nya nya.

Yay New Idleware Version 2

Yay. Finally got around redesigning this blog and website. This was overdue. Some things are still missing but these will be added in the course of the next fe days.

I also made a little sketch using Preston Blairs Animation Course Book. It is wonderful not only for learning about animation but also to get a good impression of the inking of the old masters. I highly recommend downloading it on the website of the Animation Archive. And while you’re there you might also support them with a few bucks. Scratch a beer from your drinking schedule and donate that!

Here is some more recent stuff for your eyes. First, the website (yes, basically just a wordpress blog) for this years art fair at my art school. Visit www.rundgang2007.de to get a first hand impression. Lastly some doodle pages from my sketchbook. Some of it is NSFW and not suited for minors, so if you might be offended by this don’t look at it. And don’t run around screaming like I didn’t warn you.

Last but not least if you have ever wondered what my working environment loos like. My good friend Alexander Draude took a few neat pictures of our shared studio. The guy in front of me with the white shirt is another good friend named Nils Knoblich. LINK (full set on Draude’s blog).

Sketches And A Little Strip

A little comic strip I made somewhere in between things. It features the iconic character for this years “Rundgang” and a quote of Tino Sehgals performance during the 2005 Vienna Biennial.

Also a sketch I’ve been working on for quite some time now. Didn’t know how to fet around certain issues and only came to a decent solution a few days ago. The first is a still unfinished attempt at digital coloring without any outlines. The second is good old analog inking.
