Today a very short update: I stitched all the zippers into the teddy bear suits. The one shown here fits pretty well. Some of the other suits are a little smaller and do not close completely with a toy inside. Painting the toys is the only step that remains until the finished custom run.

Here are a few more progress shots from the weekend.

1. The incision on the head: I usually don’t plan that much when making a unique custom but here it is different. I try to plan ahead and mark the places where incisions need to made so that the whole run is as similar as possible.

2. The opened heads with a vertical brainy-toothy grin: I must admit, I enjoy making these small custom runs. It gives the whole process a different sense of legitimacy.

3. Previz: Temporarily holding everything together gives me sense of where the custom is heading. For me this is much more helpful than trying to imagine everything.

4. Same story here: I thought I’d pick up some of Bob’s original Nightgamer story and here is a first test. It looks weird but that’s nothing bad, right?

More updates soon. Stay tuned.

It has been almost a year since I began working on this toy. Back then it was meant to be a submission to a local show about Russia but unfortunately I never made it. After the show I had to shift my priorities towards my graduation project and ever since I have been looking at a couple of blank resin casts that were demanding a paint job. Finally I found the time to paint of these little buggers and I am quite happy with the result.

This resin toy is about 13 cm in height and it comes in four parts. The only point of articulation is the turret of tank which can turn 360 degrees. Like all my recent toys this has been painted with special automotive effect paints. However, the details on the figure and the tank have been added with ink.

Here is another shot from the time when I was working on the sculpt.

Since a few days ago I finished working on my collaboration with Eric Nocella Diaz of Argonaut Resins and Lord Mesa on their Kalua Moola. My custom turns the “Recession Agression” version into a Netzwerk pest called “Mohawk Kid”. These gang members can be often seen in the seedier areas of the Netzwerk and are distinguishable by their use of glowing hair and eyes and the scars from many fights and their constant drug abuse. Cheap color shifting skin is also quite popular among these.

This one off piece was made of a resin toy about 4″ high and modified with an internal battery powered LED circuitry and optic fibers. The light switch is hidden under the coin in the back. Pushing the coin up towards the mohawk activates the LEDs. The battery is replaceable.

Available at the Argonaut Resins Online Store for mere $158. Includes a header card signed by Lord Mesa and Eric Nocella Diaz, a small vinyl Netzwerk logo sticker and a hand drawn original header card by me.

This is the other custom that I finished on the same day as the Eyezon custom. This vinyl toy has a clear outer casing and a visible guts inside. These were just as transparent as the outer vinyl when I got the toy but I decided to darken them by burning the plastic with a lighter and paint thinner. I then installed a motion activated LED each inside the brain and the belly. The eyes are gooey strands of silicone that were attached to the outside of the puffer balls I got the LEDs from. The whole has been finished off with some color shift paint, glitter and lots of high gloss coating.

I bought this pair of Blobpus and Blobpi at Charactics in Osaka, Japan but never really enjoyed its color scheme so I decided to give it some of my own magic. This one has a base coat of pearlescent green acryl on which I put some high glossy acryl and let it drip all over. While the paint was still wet I partially covered it with neon pink spray paint which resulted in cracks of the latter since it dries a lot faster. The eyes are a mixture of orange and gold acryl with a glossy clear coat mixed with gold as well.

Here is a custom for a good friend I have been working on in the past two weeks. Like some other customs in the past it took me a bit to find the way and partially sanding it down saved the day once again. I really enjoyed doing this one and I regret that the airline I am flying with has such restrictive rules concerning the weight of my luggage (20kg per person!) otherwise I would have bought another kokeshi for future customization. On the other hand I ordered a bunch of toys at rotofugi that are only waiting to be customized, so it is not like I do not have enough to do in the near future. ^_^
