Finally finished. I realized I need to start painting bigger pictures since this one is awfully small and fleshing out the details wasn’t as much fun as it could have been. It also taught me that I need to learn to be more exact and precise when choosing colors.

Oh, and if you don’t get the story (some details are still hard to make out, unfortunately): It is about the unpredictability of love. The little robot thinks he has found his love by tearing the petals of a flower and decides to send a letter of love to his new girl but through an accident he has to find out that his heart has decided otherwise…

Here is another little story I recently finished for a little group effort we’re putting together for the upcoming Comic Salon in Erlangen, Germany. The story will be available in a little booklet in the size of 15 cm by 15 cm (6″ x 6″). I will be at the Comic Salon as well for the first three days and if you’d like your copy signed just hit me up. Of course you can order it directly here as well as soon as it is available.

I hope the story is understandable even for non-German readers but just in case, here is a translation for the second page. Panel 1: “Your roast is delicious, Marie.” Panel 2: “Thanks marc, your wine is delicious as well.” Panel 3: “And Nina, what did you bring along?” Panel 6: “Me.”

Ice Comic – finally finished

Before I forget about posting this again. I am proud to be among the select few in this years volume of the “Triebwerk” the anthology of the illustration class of the school of art and design in Kassel. My contribution is the comic story I’ve been posting about earlier. And as further motivation here is the comic in its entire form (in German, of course). Ice Comic WIP 2

It’s been a while since I’ve shown you anything regarding the comic I am currently working on. As hinted in the comments and elsewhere I’ve spent some considerable time on reworking the story. At the moment I am focusing on the inking and hopefully I can progress to the coloring stage soon. Here is a peek into page 3 of the current state of the story. Inked but not colored and the dialogue is not present either, yet.

Tourism, Sinkholes And Sketches

As if there were not already enough things to do I have also purchased a Nintendo DS. A major time sinkhole. Next to all the available games there is also an whole slew of “homebrew” applications crying for your attention. Actually one of these was the sole reason why I got the thing in the first place. “Colors!” is the name and it’s basically a very stripped down version of painter and it has everything one could ask for. Since the touchscreen of the DS has built-in pressure sensitivity one is able to paint with brushes of varying size and opacity. Very good for pinning down an idea quickly without having to search for the colored pencils and also quite handy for digital on-the-spot miniature plein-air painting (like taking a snapshot with your point-and-click camera).

Enough talking, here is my first try-out sketch.

Then, the day before yesterday, I realized I had this comic strip in my drawer and all I needed to do to finish it was the lettering…

Ice Comic WIP

I am currently working on a four page short story comic. It is a true story and revolves losly around the subject of climate and the melting of ice. So far I am done with the storyboard and I am going to start with the finalization in the next days. I forgot to translate it in this version but I will do so for the next update. Until then you’ll have to make do with my little synopsis below.

The story starts with me and a friend sitting in a café during summertime. It is very hot and I express that I can not understand why my friend would drink a hot chocolate during a time like this. I continue with describing how the ice in my glass melts so fast that I can almost watch the process. While saying this I am reminded of a winter about 20 years ago that was so cold that the Baltic Sea almost completely. My parents, my brother and me made a trip out to the sea and were astonished to see big chunks of ice sticking out. Almost like the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich. Of course my brother and me get very excited about all the ice and we come back to our parents with big pieces of ice that we want to take home as a souvenir. All efforts of our parents trying to tell us that ice won’t hold out for long are in vain and so we go back home. The story ends with me being surprised of seeing the ice turn into water…

Messy Sakana Sketches

Whew, just before the university closed its doors again and keeps them shut until next week I managed to get some pages of my current sketchbook scanned. Once again I am enjoying experiments with various liquid colored food stuff. Tea, coffee, nissin cup noodle soup, you name it, I probably tried it. I also seem to have developed a sense for finding fish in those blotches. I don’t know why but maybe it is because I have been eating a lot of fish ever since I arrived in Japan… Oh yeah, and do not miss to take a look at the last image wich is a good and honest preview for a little series of cartoony strips I am working on. I hope the subject will become easier to identify once the lettering and rest of the page is done.

The Rack And The Stack

Gender complications in spacesuits are just so much more fun. Inspired by a joke I’ve read in a mag for girls. Err,… In case you don’t understand German, here is a little translation although not as good as the original. Panel 1: “Well that’s not much of a stack you got there, young lady.” Panel 2: … uhmm … Panel 3: “Well, it is enough to fry your little wad of meat!”

Rotopol Inked Black Comic

I was a bit productive these last days. First I finished the comic I’ve been working on since tuesday and I also got through inking the poster for Rotopol. All that remains is coloring and throwing in some appropriate type.

Wii Bit O’ Madness

Oh goodness. I just wasted myself over the madness of wii yesterday… err… today. Started playing yesterday at about 22:00 with a friend and out new bought wii. We stopped this morning at 06:30. Eek. Then I got up at 9:30 to pick up where I had left before all the gaming. To be exact I was working on a comic to be submitted to the currently running competition of the Fumetto in Luzern, Switzerland. The theme this year is “Future”. Due date for submission? Today, of course. I feel quite exhausted now. Partly because of the lack of sleep, party because of the pressure to get everything finished and rush everything to the mail office. Here are some scans of the various stages of production and a shot of the final comic (yeah, didn’t have enough time for scanning anymore):

Of course this hasn’t been all. The opening of the exhibition of our illustration class at the Caricatura was on Friday. There was even some press coverage. You can see me saying how much I like drawing (sorry, only German) – LINK. Before that, but on the same day I still had to present the newly revamped website of the animation class – LINK.

Another commissioned ad

I don’t feel like writing much of the usual gibberish today, so I will only post what I’ve been working on like mad over the weekend. Another commissioned ad for the previously mentioned “Triebwerk Nr. 2″. I started sketching at 2 am and was done with inking around 10 am. Coloring it took another day. The ad is for one of the main sponsors Prolog, and thus needed something extra cool. Dunno if that worked out… You be the judge.

Oh, I also thought I’d not feel like posting another wee link, but you know what? I already saved one before I even knew what I was going to write next.
